Sunlight spilled across the slate-blue sea, the sort of morning that invites hope beneath a cool Atlantic breeze. Out there, somewhere in the broad swells between shoals and shorebirds, Hayley made her gentle entrance, gliding with the calm certainty of a regular summer visitor returning home.

Long ago, back in March of 1982, Hayley showed up in the balmy waters off Silver Bank, Dominican Republic. That far-flung beginning, under subtropical skies, was the first hint of her adventurous journey. Then, just as suddenly as she appeared, Hayley faded into sea-bound mystery—disappearing for decades as if the ocean had simply swallowed her story whole.

It wasn’t until July of 2018, amidst the teeming laughter and birds over Witless Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador, that Hayley surfaced once more. Crowds marvelled at her broad, speckled fluke, and for that brief, sunlit window, her presence delighted all who caught a look. She lingered in southern waters of Witless Bay in early August, then slipped away again into the wild blue yonder.

The years that followed brought her back with a kind of fond regularity—Bay Bulls, Lower Cove Head, and as far east as Trinity. She even paid Petty Harbour-Maddox Cove a visit in 2026, swirling through kelp-swirled coves and granite arms. Especially around Bay Bulls and the stretch to Witless Bay, Hayley seemed right at home, as if retracing steps on a well-loved path each summer. Every new sighting, especially after nearly 40 silent years, feels like a treasure found washed ashore.
