There’s a special kind of magic in the cool, northern air when the wildflowers bow to the salty breeze, and Kyle the humpback makes his entrance. Some folk come for the iceberg spotting or a dish of touton, but the real show often glides just beneath the waves, tail flicking a silent hello.

Kyle’s journey tells a tale of vast wanderings and bold leaps. Way down the coast in late December 2012, he was spotted near Virginia Beach—maybe he fancied the warmth or the shuffle of the sandy tides. Not long after, stories of his massive presence bubbled up in August 2014 off Battle Harbour, Labrador; imagine, one minute squawking gulls, next, a mighty whale cuts through the chill Labrador current.

The years rolled by, and Kyle graced Lower Bonavista Bay in May 2019, slipping through waters still waking from winter’s hold. By September 2022, he returned to the familiar crags of Battle Harbour, perhaps hoping to stir memories in those who watch and wait. It seems his heart—or maybe his stomach—favours the north.

More recently, Kyle became something of a regular around St. Lunaire-Griquet, with sightings popping up in July 2023 and twice in summer 2025, weaving between Saint Lunaire’s rugged coves and the misty arms near Quirpon. There’s a pattern here: a fondness for Newfoundland’s north, an unspoken bond with these brisk, kelpy narrows.
