On a fine summer day when the capelin rolled in like silver confetti and the air was full of seabird chatter, Lilly made her entrance—a graceful traveller painting her stories upon the blue canvas of the North Atlantic.
Back in July 2017, Lilly decided to make a cheerful mess of bubbles around Witless Bay. In just a few days, she flitted between Witless Bay and Bay Bulls, the kind of visitor who pops up at every kitchen party along the Irish Loop. Her fluke was seen again in Witless Bay several times that summer, each sighting a treat for boaters hoping to catch a glimpse of her gentle dives.
Then, as the years shuffled along, Lilly was next spotted in 2020 near the Renews Rocks. Some folks say the swells out there can tell stories themselves, and it seems Lilly’s journey took a more mysterious turn with each passing season. She kept her distance from curious eyes for three full years before gracing Bonavista with her presence in August 2023, thrilling lucky onlookers along those storied cliffs.
By July 2024, Lilly’s name drifted northward on saltwater breezes. She was seen twice in one day near the picturesque harbour of Trinity, known for its colourful houses and friendly faces. Who knows what she’s spied beneath those calm coves—perhaps a secret or two only a whale would know. Whenever her tail reappears, it’s like an old friend returning to a favourite haunts.
Bonavista and Trinity are not just whale hotspots—they’re also famous for their historic harbours and iceberg views, making them perfect places to spot both gentle giants and frozen wonders.
