Not every summer day by the Atlantic brings calm seas, but a little commotion can make for the best stories. Along the bright, salt-scrubbed shores of Newfoundland and Labrador, there’s a male humpback named Adam who’s been carving his own path through the waves. Some say a breeze seems to chase him when he’s around, and perhaps that’s just the wind eager to keep up.

Back in July 2024, Adam caught the attention of those peering from Bay Bulls, as he rose from the blue, his presence a grand punctuation on a lively day. Later that month, he was seen gliding through Witless Bay, where puffins dip and dive in the golden light. The sea sparkled as Adam surfaced once more in early August, right in the heart of Witless Bay, stirring up a flurry of gulls overhead.

As the calendar turned, June of 2025 brought Adam near Doughfig Point—a place where the rocky coast seems to stretch out like a curious seal. And just weeks later, he returned to Witless Bay, almost as if checking if the capelin run was as good as he remembered. High summer found him around Ship Island, where kelp forests sway beneath the waves and the air hums with the gossip of seabirds.

By July of 2026, Adam switched over to Gull Island near Bonavista, making his mark in waters bustling with life. His wanderings, from Witless Bay to Bonavista, seem to paint a watery map of Newfoundland and Labrador’s wild coastline, a reminder that some journeys unfold with a swirl of salt and sunlight.
