When a streak of sunlight slips through cloud cover and kisses the water’s surface, it can feel as though the ocean itself is sharing a sly wink. Cristina, one of the old souls of the Atlantic, is no stranger to these playful exchanges between sky and sea.
Cristina’s first known journey was recorded in July 1980, deep in the arms of Trinity Bay. It was a summer that filled the bay with the scent of salt and the calls of seabirds. In those early days, she glided beneath sheer cliffs, the surface patterned with light from a high sun, as though each ripple marked a new chapter.
Time, as the tides do, began to drift. For over twenty years, Cristina vanished from shared stories. Her whereabouts were a mystery as deep as the blue itself. Then, in January 2004, she was found slicing through the warm, sapphire waters of Silver Bank, near the Dominican Republic—thousands of kilometres from her northern home. There, she mingled in the calving grounds, where warm surges replace northern chill and coral heads hide beneath turquoise waves.
Fourteen more years slipped by, and then, as if drawn back by the salt on a northwest breeze, Cristina was spotted once more in Witless Bay in July 2018. The kelp rolled and puffins wheeled overhead as she resurfaced where summer in Newfoundland buzzes with promise. Her latest known visit brought her again to Silver Bank in 2025—a gentle wanderer with stories still in the making.
